if i mess up an exam, is it possible to re-take before next summer?

Nope, but you can repeat the leaving cert, that is of course possible. I am also aware that there is certain subjects that don’t have to repeat if you wish not but to be honest I have no idea what way it works, try http://www.examinations.ie for more information on repeating.
